When you don’t have a lot of space you have to make the most of what you do have. Sometimes, when doing renovations you can remove walls or rearrange to create a larger space for your bathroom. But in many renovations you want to use a cosmetic uplift to improve the usability and aesthetic appeal, without the expense of removing walls and rearranging facilities.
Here are 5 tips to help you create the illusion of a bigger space.
1. Stay away from dark colours
To give the illusion of space pale, soft colours on the walls and floor are best. You can add little pops of colour here and there by including colourful accessories and decorations. Light paint colours stretch small spaces and create visually spacious bathroom design.
2. Make use of clear glass and mirrors
One of the most common and efficient ways of creating the illusion of space is using a lot of glass and reflective surfaces. Reflective surfaces bounce light around and help light an otherwise dim space. If you have a shower in the bathroom, ditch the shower curtain or frosted glass shower door and replace it with a clear glass door. This will open up the shower space. You may even consider removing the shower base, instead using a drain in the floor and clear and frameless shower screen.
3. Use large format tiles
Another way to make the bathroom appear more spacious is to use larger tiles instead of small ones. You’ll need fewer tiles to cover your space, which means less grouting and lines breaking things up visually. Thus creating the illusion the room is larger.
4. Get an built-in bathtub
If you must have a bath then give up your dreams of having a free standing or island bath. The better option is a built-in bathtub. It will fit in a three-walled enclosure and is also cheaper than a free standing tub. Instead of having a separate shower and bath units, you can place the shower over the built-in bath, saving more space.
5. Custom cabinetry to optimise the space
There is so much flexibility and options are endless when it comes to bathroom cabinetry. You don’t need to restrict your options to the ready made vanities. You can design a vanity and storage options in the bathroom to maximise the use of the space. Choosing options which blend with your chosen wall colours will keep the space open and bright then you can add colour with towels and accessories.
